Hendricks photos from days gone by

Here are a couple pics of the first children in Hendricks, along with some other interesting and historic photos from our past.

Peder Bogen (1862-1940) and his wife Raghnild (1859-1924) are pictured with children Jay and Ina. Jens Forseth (Peder's father) is in the background.

The Bogen family family portrait taken a couple years later shows more kids, more cattle, a nicer buggy, and a dog for the children! Their homestead farm is near Lake Hendricks in South Dakota and the foundations are still visible, located near the Orris Hexum farm.

Taken just outside of Hendricks, the Hinsvark farm was a typical farmstead back in the 1880's. Scandinavian farmsteads tended to be have many buildings, with horizontal siding. Germanic farmsteads had multi-use buildings with vertical siding.

This is an area plot map showing the area two years prior to the incorporation of Hendricks Minnesota. Note the mainly Norwegian farmsteads to the north and the Germanic farmsteads to the south.

This undated aerial view offers a good view of Main Street and the elevator complex. In the upper right corner is the public school. The upper center shows the 'Black Top' basketball and tennis courts.

This first view of the grain elevators shows train cars unhitched to not cross the highway. Kirkvold's Oil glistens on the corner. Across the street, Vick's Corner Grocery is more shaded by trees.
